Drawize

Over the years and thanks to the advancement of technology we have witnessed the obsolescence of products and artifacts,

With “Drawize a Sketch” we want to give a new digital life to the iconic childhood game Etch a Sketch, by allowing users to draw on an iPad twisting the knobs to move a stylus along 2 axes we want to recreate the interactive experience of the famous mechanical drawing toy invented by André Cassagnes in the late 1950s.

The goal was to create a product that challenges the mind to draw in a different way with the infinite possibilities that technology offers.

Knob interaction

Interface and Interaction Modality →

First Interaction

The user slides an iPad or Tablet inside and places the Stylus in the pen holder.

Drawing

To draw something on the screen, the user has to rotate the knobs left, right, up and down.

This movement affects the mechanism inside (CoreXY), which moves the pen on both axes, allowing the user to draw whatever he wants.

User Experience

While playing with Drawize a Sketch, the user experiences a game that takes him back in time, despite being used with a modern device.

With this product, the difficulties of drawing are multiplied, making the experience much more challenging and engaging.

Prototype

Bringing it all together

Drawize a Sketch is a game for kids that lets them experience the iconic drawing game that their parents loved when they were young. It is also a way for the same parents to experience once again the pleasures of childhood.

Besides taking into account the original way of interacting with “Etch a Sketch“, we carried out research to find a more efficient mechanism that would allow us to offer the user more precise movements. We tested multiple concepts and finally came up with a solution that fits what we were looking for in terms of space, ease of use and manufacturing.

We redesigned the Etch a Sketch drawing board game to adapt it to the present day, giving people the chance to experience the sensations of an iconic childhood game with a system that is easy to learn, efficient to use and fun to play.
